Making Sure You Are Checking Out Through A Secure Socket Layer (SSL)

Before entering your credit card or other sensitive data through an online Shopping Checkout system, it is important to ensure that the web page is on a Secure Socket Layer (SSL).

If you arrive at a page which asks you to enter credit card information that it is not on a Secure Socket Layer, your personal information is not safe.

Two Quick Tests

Here is two quick ways to make sure that the merchant shopping cart you are using to checkout your Online Shopping goods is secure enough to enter your credit card information.

  • Check The URL (Address)
  • Check For Security Encryption

Check the URL (Address)

A secure page will begin with https:// while regular, unsecure pages begin with http://.

Check For Security Encryption

Somewhere in your web browser (it depends on which one you use), there will be a padlock. The padlock should be in the locked position to indicate that the page is secure.

Locked SSL Padlock

Always Check Both

The URL (Address) of the payment page should begin with https:// while at the same time the SSL Padlock should be locked.
